Transmission Expansion Set to Unlock More Renewable Energy Capacity in South Africa

South Africa’s plans to significantly expand its electricity transmission network could play a critical role in unlocking new renewable energy generation and strengthening the country’s future electricity system.

The Department of Electricity and Energy and National Treasury have reaffirmed government’s commitment to the Independent Transmission Projects (ITP) Programme.

The programme introduces private-sector participation in the development of South Africa’s national transmission infrastructure and forms part of government’s strategy to accelerate grid expansion.

Why transmission matters for renewable energy

South Africa has excellent renewable energy resources, particularly solar and wind.

However, building new generation facilities is only part of the solution.

Electricity generated by these projects must be transported from generation areas to homes, businesses and industries across the country.

This requires sufficient transmission infrastructure.

Additional transmission capacity will be particularly important for connecting the substantial new generation capacity envisaged under the Integrated Resource Plan 2025, including renewable energy projects.

Expanding the grid could therefore help remove one of the significant constraints facing the development of new renewable energy generation.

Independent Transmission Projects progressing

Government is continuing preparations for the first phase of the Independent Transmission Projects Programme.

Further consultation with seven pre-qualified bidders will take place before the final Request for Proposals is issued. A second draft RFP package is expected before the end of 2026.

Work is also progressing on the Credit Guarantee Vehicle and related financing and governance structures intended to support the programme.

The transmission programme represents an important change in the way South Africa develops major electricity infrastructure, opening the door for increased private investment alongside public-sector development.

For the sustainable energy sector, expansion of the national transmission network will be an important foundation for future renewable energy growth.

A stronger grid can help South Africa connect additional solar, wind and other generation projects while supporting energy security and economic development. South African Government
