Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA) is dedicated to the promotion, use and development of renewable energy and energy efficiency. This includes all solar technologies such as photovoltaics, thermal heating and cooling, concentrated solar power as well as wind, biomass and hydro, to name a few. Other focal points include energy efficiency both through behavioural change and technology intervention as well as passive building design and green transport.

The inter-disciplinary nature of SESSA attracts the membership of industry, scientists, researchers, developers and the general public – the only requirment is a keen interest in renewable energy and energy efficiency and its utilisation to ensure a sustainable energy future.

SESSA is one of 50 National Sections of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES).

ISES is regarded as the premier body in solar energy with members in over 100 countries. SESSA is the duly appointed African office of ISES.

SESSA is a founding member of SAREC (South African Renewable Energy Council). The main objective of SAREC is to promote the renewable energy sector in South Africa by acting as an umbrella body to the industry associations representing specific renewable energy technologies.

History:

SESSA was founded in 1974 and has been actively promoting the cause of renewable energy and energy efficiency ever since.

SESSA was instrumental in developing the “SWH Rebate Programme” managed by Eskom.
