SOLTRAIN

SOLTRAIN 2 is a three-year project which aims to enhance solar thermal technology in Southern Africa and to support the transition to renewable energy within the context of relevant national policies. SOLTRAIN is focussed on solar thermal systems because solar radiation levels in Southern Africa are high, and these systems can readily be manufactured or assembled in the region. Solar thermal systems like solar water heating have a huge potential to alleviate the serious problems of unemployment, power supply, energy costs, and pollution.

SOLTRAIN 2 has been designed on the feedback from the first SOLTRAIN programme as well as on the External Evaluation Recommendations. The activities include the following core areas:

  • Project management, Reviews and Evaluation
  • Awareness Campaign
  • Solar Thermal Technology Platform(s)
  • Centres of Competence
  • Flag ship Demonstration Sites/Districts

AEE – Institute for Sustainable Technologies (AEE INTEC)

AEE – Institute for Sustainable Technologies (AEE INTEC) was founded in 1988 as an independent research association and is now one of the leading institutes for applied research in the fields of solar thermal energy, low-energy and zero energy buildings as well as in energy efficiency in industry. Besides these energy related topics also sustainable water management is a focus areas.

Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES)

The Centre for Renewable and Sustainable Energy Studies (CRSES) acts as a central point of entry into Stellenbosch University for the general field of renewable energy. Some contract research projects are completed within CRSES while others end up in the other academic departments or research entities of the University. Stellenbosch University has a Division for Research Development that, in cooperation with the Finance and Legal Departments, manages all larger research contracts in the University, including those of CRSES. The University's financial statements are audited annually and the finances for CRSES are run in separate cost centres.

Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa (SESSA)

The Sustainable Energy Society of Southern Africa or SESSA, is dedicated to the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency including all solar-based energies such as photovoltaics, thermal heating and cooling, wind, biomass and hydro power. These principle sources of energy can be used in passive building design and in energy efficiency projects.
